The TV system in the United States and Canada is different from the system in Israel. Make sure any TV you import is Multi-System.
LCD and plasma TV’s are still very worthwhile importing on your rights. Less so for normal TV’s. All of the export TV sold in America are multi-system and multi-voltage, meaning they automatically adjust to the proper TV broadcast, video, and electrical system. They will allow you to view videos from America or other countries in Israel. This will also permit you to buy and use a TV before you come on Aliya.
If you bring a standard American TV to Israel, you will not be able to receive Israeli broadcasts or cable, view videos or-even after adding a transformer-clearly view videos from a multi-system video. DVD (digital video disc) offers very high resolution video playback and will work on a multi-system TV. Of late, they are very popular in Israel, and are available for rental and sale. If you have a DVD in your computer, you may be able to play it on your TV through a connection to your video. (Let us know if you figure out how to do it.) Note that multi-zone dvd's are very inexpensive in Israel, $80-150. Good multi system vcrs are not inexpensive in Israel.
Stereo TV
The best stereo sound requires detachable speakers or playing the TV through the stereo (AV-out). The speakers must be about two meters apart. Some TV’s have Dolby surround, which requires a second set of speakers, or even another three.
Making Recordings for the “Old Country”
Neither multi-system nor PAL-only videos will allow you to record an Israeli broadcast and send it to America, unless the viewer there has multi-system TV and video. There is one Aiwa VCR which-when paired with another VCR-allows you to create an NTSC videotape from a PAL broadcast or recording-and vice versa.
Camcorders
An NTSC camcorder will allow you to send the recording back to America for viewing on a standard VCR. If you have a multi-system video and TV, you will be able to view the results in Israel as well. The popular systems are digital disc, cassette, VHS-c and hi-8.
Cable TV
Cable TV with CNN, movie channels, sitcoms, BBC and another 20 channels is available in most of the big cities and in many kibbutzim.
Most late model computers are multi-voltage. The actual machine may be worth buying in Israel, since prices are now comparable, and you get a service contract. This does not hold for most laptop/notebooks, and most software that are still dramatically overpriced. Lenovo is the best brand to buy for notebooks, since they have excellent service support in Israel. One computer per family is now tax-free for both new immigrants and returning residents. This includes anything built in to the computer (i.e. a dvd) and a printer.
Any fax machines that have a US or European standards institute’s approval (i.e. Underwriters Laboratory, for example) can be legally imported upon payment of a 31% tax. This includes 110 models those that can be used with a transformer, if they are 50/60 cycles. Since there are many US faxes under $200, you can carry one in tax free as a gift without using your rights.
These must be 50/60 or 50 cycles. Finally…there is a possibility of getting them in the US. Even though the taxes are about 40%, will require a transformer, and will not be serviceable in Israel, it is still worth a try. They are called digital copiers and are offered by most of the well-known companies. Brother, HP, and Canon, among others, make combination scanner, fax, phone, and printers, either laser or ink jet. Some have flat bed scanner/copiers, others sheet feed. They are worth considering, though they require a transformer, and are partly taxable. It may be worth checking that exact or similar models are sold in Israel.
